The City Council is the lawmaking body of the city. The council is responsible for serving and advancing the general welfare, health, happiness, and safety of our citizens through exercising its legislative authority. Three members elected from Crestview's three
precincts and
two "at large" members make up the council. They are elected for four-year terms of office. Council members assume office on the first business day in April in the year of their election. Annually, they elect a
President and Vice
President to guide meetings and perform certain duties.
The council determines the budget, policies, programs, and plans for the future, plus considers major problems and issues which confront the city government. In turn, this process allows the council to evaluate the effectiveness of the city operations and delivery of public services. The council prepares and reviews bills and those that are adopted become laws in the form of ordinances. Other policies on many different matters are established as resolutions and written procedures.
Growth and development within Crestview is directed by the Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations. As such, perhaps the most important task facing the City Council is guiding Crestview's future.
The Comp Plan documents address land use, public facilities, zoning and how development and growth within the city shall occur. A public forum process is used extensively to allow Crestview citizens to have input into the governance process. This method works well with a small town population.
Regular City Council meetings are held in the council chambers at City Hall at
6:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of each month. Special meetings and
workshops are held on an as-needed basis.
